Our favourite places to visit
Your main priority will of course be your film, but after a hard day or week working you’ll want to have some leisure time. Here’s what our camera crews in the Frankfurt have to say about the local attractions:
Eating and Drinking
Adolf Wagner Schweizer Strasse, Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt http://www.apfelwein-wagner.com/ Frankfurt is famous for its Apple Wine, or Cider. It is a very distinctive drink and at Adolf Wagner’s they’ve been serving this delicious tipple with hearty local fare since 1931. Highly reccomended.
“Alte Sachsenhausen is the best place in Frankfurt with great Beers and fine food. Us Germans know how to relax after working hard!”
Sightseeing
The Museum of Modern Art Domstrasse, Frankfurt http://mmk-frankfurt.de/en/home/ Dubbed “the piece of Cake” by locals, as it is a triangular shape just like its nick-name sake. Inside culture-vultures can admire works of art by legends including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Joseph Beuys. The museum has a programme of temporary exhibitions that changes regularly.
“People think that Frankfurt’s all about money, money, money. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is as much also a city of painters, thinkers and drinkers!”
Local’s Tip
See the view from the Kaiserdom Domplatz, Frankfurt http://www.dom-frankfurt.de/ Frankfurt is a German city like no other. Take in a splendid view that encompasses everything from ancient to modern from the top of the cathedral. Warning: It’s 95 metres high, so lots of steps!
“The Kaiserdom was for long the place they crowned the Holy Roman emperor, and is still a magificent place to visit”
Filming in Frankfurt? You’re in good company!
Frankfurt is a very atmospheric place with lots and lots of history. Here are some films shot or set in the city that draw upon what makes it a special place:
Berlin Express (1948) – Drama featuring Merle Oberon in a story about the search for a kidnapped peace activist in the post war rubble of Germany.
The Devil’s Daughter (1991) – Schoolteacher nearly gets run over by a car. Narrow escape you’d think, but you’d be wrong, wrong, wrong! She ends up getting chosen to give birth to the son of Satan. Bet you hope that kind of malarkey doesn’t take place in your corporate film…
In Danger and Deep Distress, the Middleway Spells Certain Death (1974) – Innovative and prize-winning film that tells the story of two wayward women. One is a thief, the other a spy. Atmospheric film that is part mock documentary and directed by Edgar Reitz and Alexander Kluge.
The Frankfurt Film Festival,
The Frankfurt Film Festival brings fine films from Germany and the rest of the world to a cultured audience.
