the lowdown on Angola
At a glance: Angola is one of largest country in the world, located in the South West of Africa. The name of the country comes from the term “Ngola” (an attribute of respect for the sovereigns Ndongo corresponding to the English “Majesty”). The Portuguese gave this official name to the country in the sixteenth century in honour of those sovereigns, their faithful allies. The capital is Luanda, primary port and major industrial, cultural and urban centre on the north-western side of the country. The landscape is a unique cocktail of spectacular rock formations, many waterfalls, lakes and rivers. The country is also rich in mineral resources: important minerals as oil, diamonds, natural gas, iron, copper and gold. From Kissama’s grassland park to the Tunda-Vala volcanic fissure, there is no shortage of mesmerising sights in this underestimated country. Despite efforts to rebuild after the conflict, transport remains a problematic issue in this country. The conditions of many roads make driving one of the most challenging aspects in living in Angola. There are three separate railway lines in Angola (Luanda Railway – CFL in the North, Benguela Railway – CFB in the centre and Mocamedes Railway – CFM in the South). Best time to visit or/and shoot June to August during the dry season Official language – Portuguese. Curiosities about Angola – Monica De Miranda, an artist and researcher (born in Porto and graduated in London), went to Angola to investigate her family’s roots by using the photography. This work, called “Panorama”, was shown at the Tyburn Gallery in London. Hollow City (2004) is one of the first movies to be produced in Angola since the end of the civil war. Film was shot in the capital city of Luanda, Angola. Other films to mention concerning Angola (such as Sambizanga, Les Oubliees or the Hero) are all about the conflict period. Sumbe Music Festival is a three-day September international festival (characterized by performances, bands, singers and dancers) taking place in Sumbe City.
