At a glance: Haiti is one of the largest countries in the Caribbean. It has to share with the Dominican Republic Hispaniola, the big island in the Greater Antilles archipelago. The official languages in the country are French, a heritage of colonial era, and Creole. Despite poverty, civil war, urban overpopulation and especially the terrible earthquake in 2010, the Haitian people have an unparalleled humour and you can see that in their language, music and dance. Haiti can boast beautiful flat landscapes on the coast. The hinterland is mountainous with amazing waterfalls, dramatic panoramic views and dense forests. The coastline is littered by white-sand beaches and characteristic fishing villages where you can find out their bizarre but intriguing voodoo culture. As it’s easy to imagine, there is shortage of well-preserved historic monuments on the Haitian territory but the Palais Sans Souci (the royal residence of King Henri I of Haiti) and the Citadel Laferriere (a large mountain top fortress) charming locations where getting to for shooting winning photos. Haiti’s climate is tropical, hot year-round. The heat is enjoyable in the period from November to March, while it becomes bothersome from May to October, except along the coasts, where it is tempered by the breezes.
