The lowdown on Linz
At a glance: Linz is the third largest city in Austria, the capital of the Upper Austrian federal state, in the Centre North of Austria, on the banks of the Danube, halfway between Vienna and Salzburg. Linz is one of the main economic centres of Austria, hosting an important and historical network of chemical companies, specialised in the production of steel. These chemical plants are impossible to ignore watching the landscape if you approach the city the East; on the contrary, the approach from the West along the Danube, with the old town (the Altstadt) in the foreground, is idyllic Kepler was an illustrious citizen of Linz and, right here, the 15th of May 1618 discovered the three laws of the planetary movement. There is also another well-known old citizen, whose memory doesn’t make the current inhabitants of the city as proud as for the above-mentioned astronomer: Adolf Hitler, who lived in Linz during his early years, aspiring to become a painter or an architect, considering the facto this place as his home-town. Some curiosities about the city: Linz shared the European Capital of Culture honours with Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, in 2009; in the heart of Linz there is a street, called the Linzer Landstrasse, that is the busiest shopping street outside of Vienna. Curiosities about Linz – Although Linz lies in a heavenly landscape, made up of the Danube river and delightful hills, it is a busy industrial city. At the foot of a characteristic castle (Linzer Schloss), strolling through the heart of the old town, you can enjoy historical buildings and magnificent churches. Among them, there are the New Cathedral, the largest church in the country, and pilgrimage basilica on the Postlingberg, from whose viewing platform it’s possible to take stunning photos of the cityscape. “Karate Magic in Linz” is a documentary about an important sports event as the Karate world championship that takes place in this city in 2016.
